What Are Eclectic Home Designs?

February 2nd, 2010

If you love to travel and appreciate a sophisticated scheme that can’t be labeled, you may be drawn to the wit and dignity of eclectic home designs. A blend of antique and modern, practical and whimsical, eclectic takes the best of many eras.

A great eclectic bathroom design look may showcase a traditional vanity in fine walnut and mahogany paired with a modern, art-glass countertop sink and sleek modern fixtures in metal and glass. Another might be a farmhouse porcelain sink surrounded with rich stained cabinetry and modern concrete or stainless steel countertops.

In essence, eclectic design is not so much about having a mix of styles and themes all in the same room; it’s about loving more than one style and finding a way to indulge it. So how do you create this aesthetic without ending up with design disaster?

To start, choose neutral colors for walls, fabrics and floors. When there is a collection of different elements in the same space, matching colors or fabrics to one item will prove difficult. Keeping the background neutral will help showcase the pieces being used in the room better.

When using different furniture styles look for common elements in the furniture to mesh together the styles.  Use the lines, materials, colors or upholstery to keep styles on track. For example, a contemporary sofa will nicely compliment an Asian table, as both have straight, clean lines.

Use accessories that are varied, but related in some way – color, theme or texture.  Your cherished piece of carved wood African art can be placed with a rustic wooden trunk by virtue of both being wood. By keeping these simple rules in mind your next design adventure will be a success.
